Q&A With Clinton Anderson: Horse Backs Up When Asking for Vertical Flexion at the Standstill

Question: I have a bit of a problem with the vertical flexing. I just started teaching it to a 4-year-old. When we are just standing still and I want him to flex vertically, I lift the reins and push with my heels and he backs up. He’s very soft moving forward, but I can’t figure out how to get him to distinguish soften at the standstill and backing. He softens great without leg pressure, but if I try to bump him for any stiffness, he backs up. He thinks he’s doing the right thing, which is what I’m having trouble with. Will he figure it out on his own with more practice?
